Use suppression for active profile management
Klaviyo's current guidance recommends suppressing people who have shown sustained inactivity and are unlikely to return. Suppressed profiles do not contribute to the profile plan count, and Klaviyo excludes them from marketing sends.
The account keeps the profile and historical events. That makes suppression useful when the purpose is cost control, deliverability hygiene, or pausing marketing to a long-term inactive group.
Use deletion for a different purpose
Deletion is appropriate when you have a valid reason to permanently remove the profile, such as a verified privacy request or a documented data retention policy. It is not required to achieve the billing effect of becoming non-billable.
Because deleted profiles cannot be recovered, deletion should not be the default action for an inactivity segment that may need review or rollback.
Reversible does not mean consent can be invented
Removing a manual suppression can make a profile eligible again only when no other restriction applies. It does not reverse an unsubscribe, hard bounce, suspicious-email status, or another deliverability suppression.
Never use unsuppression to bypass a customer's choice. Rollback should remove only the manual suppression applied by the approved cleanup.
Preserve the exact rollback group
Before a bulk suppression, snapshot the approved segment members into a static list. If the cleanup must be reversed, unsuppress that saved list rather than rebuilding a dynamic segment whose membership may have changed.
Keep the snapshot in the merchant's Klaviyo account. This avoids creating an extra raw email export solely for rollback.
Wait for processing before checking billing
Bulk jobs can complete before the account's billable profile count is final. Verify the count after Klaviyo processes the profile state, then decide whether the account qualifies for a lower plan.
